Thesprotia

The prefecture of Thesprotia lies in the NW end of Epirus by the Ionian Sea. It is eminently a prefecture that is characterized by beautiful sea. The city's big harbour constitutes the commercial and touristic gate to Western Europe.
The place was settled from antiquity, as the first Greek gens, the Thesproti, settled in Thesprotia at 2000 B.C., then much later followed the Molossi.
The Corinthians, the Ilies and the Kerkyraii also founded colonies to the region. The region flourished and founded the "Public of Thesproton" (Public of the people of Thesprotia). Thesprotia, because of the strategic importance its place, became the centre of martial conflicts in all her history from antiquity, Roman, German and Slavic gens, Venetians and Turkish troops marched and conquered this beautiful piece of land forcing its residents to move in places with natural fortification for their safety. After centuries of fights, raids and wars, Greek army finally liberated Thesprotia on 1913 February 23rd.
The impressive thing about the Prefecture of Thesprotia is the marvellous coastline that begins from the town Sagiada and goes up to the estuaries of river Acheronta. There one can see light blue beaches with golden sand or white pebbles, calm evergreen gulfs and little picturesque harbours.
Thesprotia is certainly a place worth to see and enjoy what it's like when nature is generous.
